Aim 1: Pupils can describe the key events of 1918, the final year of WWI
Aim 2: Pupils can explain how the Allies won the war.
WWI in 1918
By 1918, the countries fighting in the war had changed since it began in 1914. Italy had never joined the Triple Alliance (with Germany and Austria-Hungary) in fighting in 1914. They believed that they had not been consulted about starting the war. Instead, in 1915 they joined Britain and France and spent their time mainly fighting Austria-Hungary.
In 1917, Russia had signed a peace deal (Armistice) with Germany after a revolution in Russia ended the rule of their Tsar. But in the same year the USA joined the side of Britain and France. We call these countries as 'The Allies.' The only catch was that at the start of 1918 the Americans had still not arrived in Europe...
Task: Watch the video below. As you do, you will need to decide which of the nine reasons for Germany's surrender is the most important. At the end of the video, place the nine reasons in the diamond attached, with the top diamond being the most important and the bottom being the least important.
British Naval Blockade | 100 Days Offensive | Germany loses its allies |
French and British stop German advance at Amiens | Allies gain supremacy in the air. | Mutiny of German navy |
Germans fail to capture the channel ports | 2nd Battle of the Marne | Americans arrive in France |
Extension: See if you can draw arrows around the outside of your diagram between different causes and annotate them to explain how the different causes were related to one another.
