What is Light and What can it Travel Through?

LO:  To investigate which materials light can travel trough

Watch the following PowerPoint as a slideshow with the sound on. (If the sound won't play from Firefly, download the slideshow and it should then work.)

You might also want to watch the following video up to 2 1/2 minutes.

Watch the following video to explain how to carry out the experiment to see how transparent different materials are.

Then do your own investigation using different materials you find around your home. You can use your phone torch if you don't have another one. Record your results in a table similar to the one in the PowerPoint.

What you should know:

  • Light carries energy and is a transverse wave
  • Different materials allow different amounts of light through them
  • Materials that let all the light through are known as transparent
  • Materials that do not allow light to pass through are called opaque
  • Materials that partially let light through are called translucent
