The two units set for the examination are as follows:

  • Thematic Study: Myth and Religion. This looks at the depiction and role of the Greek and Roman gods, the myths surrounding Heracles/Hercules in Greek and Roman culture, the use of temples, festivals, beliefs about death and burial, the mythic journeys to the underworld, the mythic founding stories of Athens and Rome and the depiction of myth in art.
  • Literature and Culture: The Homeric World. This looks at the archaeological evidence for the age in which Homer’s tales were set, including the art and tombs, to discover what life was like for the people of those societies. It also looks at the stories of Odysseus, including how the story was written and the portrayal of the characters. This includes his adventures against the Cyclops and the witch Circe, as well as his disguise in his palace.

Each unit comprises of a single examination paper. There is no coursework as part of this GCSE.
